Complexity Analysis of the Viking Labeled Release Experiments

چکیده
The only extraterrestrial life detection experiments ever conducted were the three which were components of the 1976 Viking Mission to Mars. Of these, only the Labeled Release experiment obtained a clearly positive response. In this experiment C radiolabeled nutrient was added to the Mars soil samples. Active soils exhibited rapid, substantial gas release. The gas was probably CO2 and, possibly, other radiocarbon-containing gases. We have applied complexity analysis to the Viking LR data. Measures of mathematical complexity permit deep analysis of data structure along continua including signal vs. noise, entropy vs.negentropy, periodicity vs. aperiodicity, order vs. disorder etc. We have employed seven complexity variables, all derived from LR data, to show that Viking LR active responses can be distinguished from controls via cluster analysis and other multivariate techniques. Furthermore, Martian LR active response data cluster with known biological time series while the control data cluster with purely physical measures. We conclude that the complexity pattern seen in active experiments strongly suggests biology while the different pattern in the control responses is more likely to be non-biological. Control responses that exhibit relatively low initial order rapidly devolve into near-random noise, while the active experiments exhibit higher initial order which decays only slowly. This suggests a robust biological response. These analyses support the interpretation that the Viking LR experiment did detect extant microbial life on Mars.

O2- ions and the Mars labeled release response.
Yen et al. (1) propose that O 2 – ions puta-tively formed in the soil of Mars, not microorganisms , represent " the most straightforward explanation " of my 1976 Viking labeled release (LR) life detection results. Data from radioactive organic nutrients added to martian soil (2), however, challenge that conclusion. In the data reported by Yen et al. [figure 3 of (1)], O 2 – radicals lose only 1...
متن کاملMars-like soils in the Atacama Desert, Chile, and the dry limit of microbial life.
The Viking missions showed the martian soil to be lifeless and depleted in organic material and indicated the presence of one or more reactive oxidants. Here we report the presence of Mars-like soils in the extreme arid region of the Atacama Desert. Samples from this region had organic species only at trace levels and extremely low levels of culturable bacteria. Two samples from the extreme ari...
متن کاملA Novel Method for Detection of Epilepsy in Short and Noisy EEG Signals Using Ordinal Pattern Analysis
Introduction: In this paper, a novel complexity measure is proposed to detect dynamical changes in nonlinear systems using ordinal pattern analysis of time series data taken from the system. Epilepsy is considered as a dynamical change in nonlinear and complex brain system. The ability of the proposed measure for characterizing the normal and epileptic EEG signals when the signal is short or is...
متن کاملSubstrate Stereo Selectivity May Be Used to Distinguish between Chemical and Biological Reactivity on Mars
In the Viking labeled release experiment, organic compounds added to the Martian soil were rapidly degraded as if the soil contained live microorganisms [1]. But failure to detect native organic carbon raised the possibility of a chemical reactivity as caused by the presence of inorganic oxidants [2, 3]. The debate between pro-life and anti-life views is likely to intensify in light of the resu...
متن کاملMars Oxidant and Radical Detector
Introduction: The Mars Oxidant and Radical Detector is an instrument designed to characterize the reactive nature of the martian surface environment. Using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) techniques, this instrument can detect, identify, and quantify radical species in soil samples, including those inferred to be present by the Viking experiments. This instrument is currently funded by th...
